Web Pages That Suck – learn good web design by looking at bad web design

Chastity Fabry

I’ve taken a long sabbatical from the site because of an overdose of dealing with websites and people suffering from Dunning-Kruger Syndrome. Seriously, 20 years of looking at badly designed websites takes its toll, but like John Wick, I’m back. Bad websites: Prepare to get shot in the face a la John Wick. Click picture for my feelings on the matter.

Web Pages That Suck Presents The 20 Worst Websites of 2014

some websites are unbelievably bad

This year there’s less emphasis on using Over-The-Top websites—mostly because I’ve separated them into their own document The 12 Worst Over-The-Top Websites of 2014—and started discussing mobile mistakes along with more serious design flaws. This shouldn’t be a surprise as the world is seeing a quantifiable move from the desktop to mobile.

Security by Design – Amazon Web Services (AWS)

Chastity Fabry

SbD outlines the control responsibilities, the automation of security baselines, the configuration of security, and the customer audit of controls for AWS customer infrastructure, operating systems, services and applications running in AWS. This standardized, automated, prescriptive, and repeatable design can be deployed for common use cases, security standards, and audit requirements across multiple industries and workloads.

AWS recommends building in security and compliance into your AWS account by following a four-phase approach:

Phase 1 – Understand your requirements. Outline your policies, then document the controls you inherit from AWS. Next, document the controls you own and operate in your AWS environment, and decide what security rules you want to enforce within your AWS IT environment.

Phase 2 – Build a secure environment that fits your requirements and implementation. Define the configuration you require in the form of AWS configuration values, such as encryption requirements (for example, forcing server-side encryption for

Design Thinking 101

Chastity Fabry

History of Design Thinking

It is a common misconception that design thinking is new. Design has been practiced for ages: monuments, bridges, automobiles, subway systems are all end-products of design processes. Throughout history, good designers have applied a human-centric creative process to build meaningful and effective solutions.

In the early 1900’s husband and wife designers Charles and Ray Eames practiced “learning by doing,” exploring a range of needs and constraints before designing their Eames chairs, which continue to be in production even now, seventy years later. 1960’s dressmaker Jean Muir was well known for her “common sense” approach to clothing design, placing as much emphasis on how her clothes felt to wear as they looked to others. These designers were innovators of their time. Their approaches can be viewed as early examples of design thinking — as they each developed a deep understanding of their users’ lives and unmet needs.
