Living Room vs. Family Room | Home Guides

The difference between a living room and a family room has often confused people because both spaces in the house are where people gather. Nowadays, open concept layouts have muddled the issue even more, as the great room takes over. However, formal living rooms and more casual family rooms still exist, with the difference between the rooms lying in the purpose, placement and layout of the room.

Where It Is Located in the House

Living rooms are often in the front of the house, near the entry way, and living rooms are more likely used to entertain guests on more formal occasions. Family rooms, on the other hand, are generally located in the back of the home, near the kitchen and often adjacent to an outdoor space like a deck or patio. Family rooms are more traditionally reserved for the family itself to use

3 Designers Reveal the Home Decor Items Worth Splurging On

In partnership with New York School of Interior Design

Any savvy shopper knows that your space doesn’t have to be filled with expensive items to look expensive. However, there are some home decor categories where the splurge is well worth it. A nice design piece can set the look, feel, and tone of a room, adding substance and detail that you can both see and feel and improving your overall mood. But how do you know when to spend vs when to save?

To answer that, we turned to some of the sharpest design eyes we know: alumni from New York School of Interior Design (NYSID). Offering everything from traditional undergraduate and graduate degrees to professional certifications, NYSID is home to some of the brightest minds in the industry. We asked three graduates what design items they think are pricey, but worth the splurge — and what design items you

Design History: Brutalist Home Decor

Jeni Sandberg is a dealer, appraiser and consultant in 20th century design. She has worked in museums, was a Senior Specialist at Christie’s, and also appears on WGBH’s Antiques Roadshow. She writes about fun objects on her blog. In this series, she will explore the history of decorative objects.

Metallics are having a moment in contemporary home decor, so it makes sense that bold Brutalist designs are making a comeback. Once the toast of the 1960s and ‘70s, Brutalism’s positively post-apocalyptic look found its way into everything from architecture to jewelry and lent texture and edge to homes of the period through distinctive metalwork wall sculptures and light fixtures. Today Brutalist works make perfect high-impact, of-the-moment statement pieces, and collectors are snapping up wall sculptures and chandeliers to add a little edge to their own abodes.

You could buy a new home in the1920s for under $1,500, according to the People History website. It was, however, a build-it-yourself kit, complete with everything required for assembly. Living rooms were a standard component of almost any 1920s floor plan and reflected colorful interiors with comfortable furnishings. A warm and inviting atmosphere combined with current decorating trends made a 1920s living room both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Color Palette

The color scheme in a 1920s living room was often very colorful. A variety of greens, yellows, blues, reds, browns and violets made up an assortment of 1920s color palettes. For example, jade green, taupe, dark rose and creamy yellow might make up one color scheme, while another palette might consist of rose, tan, violet, grassy green and ivory. The colors were incorporated into a living room through
