Yanic Simard, Houzz Contributor

Playing with furniture arrangement can be a decorating fan’s dream. But that’s only if you’ve got the space to play in. If you’ve got a tight living room (say 200 square feet or under), you might find yourself stumped on how to fit in enough furniture to do much living in the room. To help with that design dilemma, here are the top furniture arrangements for compact sitting areas, as well as some general tips you can use to get the most out of any room shape.

1. Large sectional + compact chairs. In a compact space, the No. 1 way to provide maximum flexibility of seating is to use a large sectional sofa and compact, European-sized chairs (such as light and tight midcentury modern seats). Convert Garage to Living Space

Chastity Fabry

If you’re looking for a way to enlarge your home without shelling out for a full-scale addition, converting your garage into living space typically adds about 600 square feet (assuming it’s a two-car garage). The good news is that you’ll spend less than if you build an addition. The bad news is that your car may suffer, and your neighbors may not be fond of the idea.

So, What Does It Cost?

Because a garage already has a foundation, walls, and a roof, using the existing structure typically costs around half what you’d spend for an all-new addition. Depending on what features you want, you’ll probably spend $20,000 to $50,000 to convert a two-car garage.

If there’s a bathroom in your plans, add another $15,000 to $25,000.

What All Does It Involve?

9. Add Sculptural Sconces

Designer Ashley Darryl put a modern spin on her friend Jeremy Globerson’s one-bedroom apartment in Manhattan by using clean-lined furnishings and carefully selected accents. Well, it’s been a pretty long break…barely any posts from me……very sorry followers!     Now that the kids are back in school though, I will have some more time to spend on this blog. Hurrah!  UNFORTUNATELY, I am not SO organised that I actually can start to blog right away! Boo!  (My “to do list” is a mile long!)

In the meantime, I thought I would share this Nature Inspired Mood Board that I did for my Interior Design course at NDA (http://www.nda.ac.uk).  The brief was to choose an inspiration for the “clients” based on their family, their lifestyle, their needs and their style preference. I chose NATURE! Coming back after spending 2 months at the lake, I thought a nature themed board would be perfectly appropriate!

When making this board, I wanted to choose accessories that emphasised the “nature” themed aspect of the room while at the same time added

Family Room Design Plan – how to design a space from scratch

Chastity Fabry

It’s finally time to tackle a few indoor projects. First up, a design plan for my family room.

It’s hard to believe it’s officially fall. It’s even harder to believe I’ve already been in my new home for more than three months. While I’ve made a lot of progress, I had wanted to be further along by now. Even though things haven’t panned out exactly as planned, I’m allowing myself a little latitude and moving forward with excitement.

With the holiday season sneaking up on us, there are two big spaces I would like to tackle: my family room and my den.

Family Room Design Plan:

These spaces function fine with the furnishings I had in my apartment, but they just aren’t what I envision in this house. We’ll save the living room for another day. Today I want to talk about my family room design plan.
