ABOUT INTERIOR DESIGN INTERNSHIPS ABROAD
Interior design interns work in interior design firms, architecture firms, property development, and construction companies. Interns assist interior designers and design teams with various stages of the design process. This may include capturing client requirements for budget, use, and function of a space. Interns may use the requirements along with building codes, structural constraints, climate and lighting considerations, as well as other factors, to create a new aesthetic and effective solution for the space. Past interns have also been involved in product research, sample and library management, sourcing and scanning images for mood boards, recording measurements, photographing spaces, and contacting suppliers.
IN THE SPOTLIGHT: INTERIOR DESIGN ABROAD
International influences are inextricably woven into the fabric of what is considered contemporary design. From the materials and textiles to the patterns, shapes and spatial constructs a designer employs, interior design borrows, shares and builds off of ideas emanating from places around the globe. Gaining international experience in interior design can be a smart career move to be sure.
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
Creativity and a keen eye for aesthetics, while important, represent only part of successful interior designer’s palette of skills. Working with clients, architects, contractors, as well as a host of stakeholders, requires excellent listening and communication skills. Good designers are translators, forming a cohesive and clear plan based on notions, ideas and feelings.
An international internship is an excellent proving ground for would-be interior designers. Interns learn about the profession in a culturally-immersive setting. In this context, communication can be challenging at first, but can ultimately lead to a sharpening of the professional skills that are invaluable to designers.
