MEDITERRANEAN WALL COLOR

Create visual depth with heavily textured walls and rich Mediterranean color. Yellow and orange are important colors to consider when creating a Mediterranean interior design. Yellow is subdued and found in shades of gold as seen in golden olive oil and creamy stucco walls in ancient buildings.

Shades of gold are Mediterranean neutrals found on floors and walls as well as in cabinetry and furniture. The orange in Mediterranean design is burnt terra cotta orange or even darker. Rusty burnt orange is used on walls and floors. Darkest shades are found in dark cabinetry, iron wall decor and furniture.

For accent colors, warm poppy red, cobalt blue, olive green and golden sunflower yellow are often found in ceramic art throughout southern Europe.

COLORFUL TEXTILES IN MEDITERRANEAN COLORS

A decorative throw pillow, a luxurious table runner or a favorite wall tapestry can be your inspiration piece for Mediterranean wall colors.

Soften metal, ceramic and other hard surface materials with colorful table runners, drapery and tapestry wall art.

With true Mediterranean colors in ochre, cinnamon, olive, terra cotta, bronze and brilliant golds, our wall tapestry compliments many Mediterranean style decorating themes.

CHOOSING WALL ART FOR AN UPDATED LOOK
Fresh artwork changes a room’s ambience almost as quickly as a fresh coat of paint. Artwork sets the mood and creates the theme. Consider updating tired old prints with stylish new ones that are complimentary to your old world Mediterranean look.

When creating a casual old world theme, acquire artwork in the subjects of wine and vineyards, fruit and floral, European landscapes, architectural themes, antique urns, tranquil lakes, ancient statues, quaint fishing villages and rugged coastlines.

MEDITERRANEAN KITCHEN COLORS
Art and color come to life in a Mediterranean kitchen with sculptured stucco ventilation hoods, granite counter tops and dramatic decorating combinations.
Kitchen islands and above kitchen cabinets are nesting places for Mediterranean style wall art, rustic earthenware, baskets and copper decorating accessories. Unique accessories bring instant Mediterranean design to food preparation and serving areas.

RED IN THE MEDITERRANEAN KITCHEN
Shades of red are dramatic in the Mediterranean style kitchen. Burnt orange and copper are shades of red found in dark wood, granite counter tops, copper wares, copper tone plant containers and wrought wall decor. Red food canisters, decorative red pottery, wrought pot hangers and framed art with predominant red tones set the stage for dramatic decorating in the old world kitchen and throughout a Mediterranean style home.

THE MEDITERRANEAN FOYER

In your Mediterranean style foyer, use iron mirrors, rustic statuary, candle holders, Mediterranean theme artwork, earthenware vases and decorative containers atop a rustic foyer table. Mediterranean foyer furniture can be simple or elegant in design. In a large foyer with tall ceilings use massive furniture. Soften rustic furniture with a colorful table runner, an upholstered chair or bench, antique books, a unique lamp and greenery to make it warm and welcoming.

MEDITERRANEAN PATIO AND TERRACE GARDENS

Mediterranean gardens are sheltered, intimate spaces for relaxing and entertaining. Garden fountains cool the terrace in warmer months and outdoor fireplaces keep outdoor living spaces cozy on cool evenings.

Containers filled with lavender and rosemary offer an abundance of fragrances. Large earthenware garden pots, iron hanging baskets and iron window baskets are commonly filled with Mediterranean herbs, grasses and flowering annuals. A patio garden is an ideal location for growing cooking herbs as well as flowering plants for seasonal color.

MEDITERRANEAN PATIO AND TERRACE GARDENS
Metal wall grilles add architectural interest and are ideal for outside decorating.

(RIGHT) This arched terrace is the ideal spot for a morning or afternoon coffee. Constructed with wide expansive arches, painted a bright salmon pink and decorated with ornamental iron there is no mistaking the Mediterranean design elements. Our oversized Barcelona wall grille on the far wall compliments the iron railing between the arches.

Iron is a favorite design material for outdoor lighting, candle holders, gates, fountains and garden ornamentation. If you live in a humid climate, a yearly application of lacquer or polyurethane will keep iron and metal decorating accessories looking like new.

To the right, rustic earthenware planters add a touch of dark gold color to this patio garden. We placed an iron topper above the fountain niche to add architectural interest and to give balance to the iron light fixtures.

CLASSIC MEDITERRANEAN HARDSCAPES
A Mediterranean hardscape contains earth tone shades of terra cotta and gold. Walls are stone or stucco and floors are natural stone pavers or sandstone.

Occasional splashes of bright color are used in the hardscape decorating accessories. Bright blue, orange or gold ceramic pots, brightly colored urns and colorful tiles around a fireplace surround or water feature are decorating accents often found in Mediterranean gardens.

High walled courtyards are common and the entrance is often a grand portico enhanced with stone columns, balustrades and ornate iron work. Walls can be found painted matte white, muted terra cotta orange and even Mediterranean sea blue.

Mediterranean gardens, terraces and patios are areas designed, furnished and decorated for casual living and entertaining.
