Puppies panting. Puppies are more vulnerable than adult dogs to heat and a range of illnesses. Panting allows evaporation of water and heat across the moist surfaces of the lungs tongue and surfaces within the mouth. Dog panting after giving birth. Normal panting dogs rely on panting as their primary means for getting rid of excess body heat.
It helps dogs cool off and is also a natural response when a dog is thirsty excited happy or scared. There is cause for concern if the panting is accompanied by other symptoms such as frequent coughing tiredness or lethargy when awake a reduced appetite of there is also considerable panting when the puppy is awake. Panting isnt normally a reason for concern but if your dog is panting excessively it could be a possible sign of heat exhaustion or overexercise. Most of the time your dog is panting to cool itself.
Though dogs do sweat a little bit from their paw pads this cannot sufficiently cool them off. Panting is totally normal. While dogs have a limited ability to sweat from their paw pads unlike humans they cant simply break into a sweat for the purpose of cooling down. Puppy panting should be investigated by a vet especially if it appears in any way abnormal.
Puppy panting when sleeping. Dog panting symptoms are not always serious so dont panic if your dog pants. Whether your rambunctious puppy is panting because of exercise excitement stress fear or simply because hes hot panting will help him cool down. If shes licking her lips or hides her face under your arm or against your shoulder she could be worried stressed or even fearful.
Dogs can also pant heavily after giving birth due to the exertion and stress whelping puts on their bodies. If your dog pants during labor or for a few hours after all the puppies have been delivered thats totally normal and she should return to within about 24 hours. So it makes physiologic sense for a dog to pant on a hot day or following exercise. It is generally normal for puppies to pant or breathe rapidly when sleeping.
The stressed or worried pup. The situation your puppy is in when she is panting as well as her other actions can be cues to the cause of the panting. You may notice your pup pants during a thunderstorm or when she is at the vets office.
