A short time before that incident, officers were dispatched just before 9 p.m. to the 700 block of East Cecil Street on the report of shots fired into the residence, according to a Springfield police report.

When police arrived, they spoke with the occupants inside the residence who said they heard at least eight gunshots outside.

“As the shots were being fired, (one woman) stated that she dove onto the upstairs hallway floor just as a spent round struck the northwest upstairs hallway window,” the report stated.

While officers were checking the outside of the residence, they did not find any spent shell casings, but did find “a fresh bullet hole to the rear of the residence, which caused damage to the siding and the wood underneath” and a spent round in the upstairs window sill, the report stated.

Officers were also dispatched around 12:30 a.m. to the 800 block of Mansfield Avenue in reference to an unknown person shooting through the kitchen window of the residence, according to a Springfield police report.

When police arrived, they spoke with two residents who were inside the kitchen when the shots were fired.

“(The two residents) stated an unknown object, what they believed was a bullet, came through the kitchen window and a few feet to their left. The bullet went through the screen and through a glass top to a cooking pot,” the report stated.

The two residents told police they didn’t hear a gunshot, but had music on in their house.

Officers then checked the outside of the residence, but were unable to find any shell casings, bullets or fragments, the report stated.

No other suspect or witness information was available for three incidents, and Springfield police continue their investigations.
